Her eyes widened and a smile spread across Emily Bland's face as she watched one of the judges at Wednesday's livestock competition walk toward her with a bright purple and gold banner, the words "Grand Champion" prominently displayed across the front.
Emily's heifer, Soggybottoms Angel, and her calf, Bullseye, took home the Grand Champion title in the class 702 junior heifer calf competition at the South Texas State Fair.
"I had a pretty good idea," Emily, 9, of Orangefield, said after the win, clutching the banner in her hands as family and friends congratulated her.
Children from across the region are competing in livestock and poultry shows in the coming days at the fair. Some will only show their animals while others will go on to the auction. Money from those sales returns to the kids.
